Thanks for coming last night and making it a wonderful party! Part One of the Plant43 Q&A x
Hi friends :)
Such a great party last night - huge thanks to everyone that came and made it so special - beautiful positive atmosphere and so many lovely people - great feelings all round and Emile and I are so grateful x
Lots more CDs to go in the post today, still some left if you want. Message me for a private Bandcamp link to Emile’s stunning long-form mix of the tracks if you bought one - a continuous deep listening session of the highest order!
Still top of the ambient charts and now fourth in all genres/formats on Bandcamp - thank you!
I asked Emile to answer a few questions - he was kind enough to do so and here’s Part One, an introduction:
Please introduce yourself and tell us how you came to work with quiet details
My name is Emile Facey and I live near London in the UK. I release under the name Plant43 and over the last 20 years I have released over 200 electro tracks on various different labels. In 2018 I broke that mould by releasing a full length ambient album on Shipwrec records.
Since then I’ve continued to release ambient music alongside my dancefloor focussed output and The Unfading Spark is my fifth album in that vein. This album is unique among the others in that most of the tracks weren’t recorded in my home studio but while in Berlin where I am a resident at Tresor.
I’ve found the experience of playing at Tresor really inspiring. I like to write new material every time I play in the club because it’s important for me to be able to express myself in that moment. Each time I was in Berlin I’ve found myself captivated by an atmosphere which I felt compelled to capture so I started writing and recording ambient tracks on my laptop. It could be while I’m waiting to play, between sound check and the live performance or even while waiting in the hotel foyer the day after the gig, or at the airport. Each time I go there I come home with a folder of tracks.
The tracks that make up the quiet details album bracket a live performance in early 2024. The first four are all about the anticipation and nerves before the show. The following three tracks were written the day after the gig and hopefully capture the feelings of elation and belonging I felt after playing.
It was my wife Jo (qd - Johnson, incredible musician and all round lovely person - check her music here) who first introduced me to Alex at quiet qetails. Jo has been composing and releasing electronic music for many years too and she and Alex were in contact. She recommended he check out some of the ambient music I’d been releasing as she thought it would be a good fit for the label. A referral I’m extremely grateful for as I’d built up quite a number of tracks that I felt fitted together but didn’t yet have a home.
The first release I heard on the label was a beautiful album by the humble bee, an artist I’d come to know previously for their incredible release on Astral Industries a few years before. Needless to say, the humble bee’s quiet details album was every bit as good as their previous work and I was an immediate fan of the label, with its beautiful and minimal aesthetic.
I was intrigued by the idea behind the label and immediately thought that my Berlin recordings would fit the concept. The whole idea behind my recordings was to capture the atmosphere and emotions of the quiet times between the extremely loud and exciting experience of playing at the club.
Working with Alex has been a big highlight of the last few months. It’s very rewarding to feel that I had complete creative freedom. An opportunity to shrug off any constraints, anxiety or expectations and simply capture whatever sounds fell out of my brain!
Big thanks to Emile! Next week we go into more detail around his musical background and more about the album - see you back here then :)
Please check out all of Plant43’s other music, it’s all fantastic and a whole world to explore x
Also check out what the Bleep43 crew are up to (Emile’s a founding member) - fresh off the back of an incredible Glastonbury session, highly recommend checking out all their artists and getting to their events if you can https://bio.site/bleep43
One more tip, Emile did the cover photography for this next-level live performance from The Transcendence Orchestra (Anthony Child (Surgeon) and Dan Bean) - recorded live at the incredible Freerotation festival last weekend - mind-bending stuff from the masters.
Much love friends and thanks for everything!
Alex
