Insights and pictures from Seabuckthorn on the making of qd16 - this warm, this late
And half price ends this Friday x
Hi friends - hope all good :)
Before we start a quick reminder that Friday is the last day to buy the qd16 digital for half price, and some CDs still left too if you want.
I asked Andy if he’d like to share a little about the making of the album, and he was generous enough to share these fascinating insights with us.
"Recording 'this warm, this late' was somewhat like an exercise in restraint. Often playing loose rhythm guitar passages or light ukulele chords. Sometimes this would be enough to represent a song, other times various layers would be integrated, trying to find a balance between the minimal and busy that can work towards forming album content. The bass and trombone by Phil was usually added last, whenever I had a few ideas scribbled down to capture and if Phil was free for a recording session at mine. Normally we do record by playing together, but I think with this album it was all overdubs.
As much as I like playing the guitar with a bow, I was trying to avoid that on this album. It's a technique I've done a lot of on previous releases. Saying that, there were still bowed double bass moments throughout. Tapping into an older method with plucks & fingerpicking, a way I used to use for compositions did feel rewarding.
Around the time of completion in January 2024, still in need of a album title, I was struck by how warm the days were, with it being so deep into winter. Still this warm, this late, I thought whilst driving. Most song titles sprung to mind when outside. The first song Serre Long is the name of a pass on one of my favourite and regular mountain walks, same with Serre Noir nearby."
Love this so much and really shows how much thought Andy put into the album from all angles - it takes a special artist to have such imagination and command of their instruments, and turn that into incredible tracks and a cohesive album - I think we can all agree he did that with the utmost skill and finesse.
Huge thanks again to Andy and please go and check out his other music - just all so good.
Now some shout-outs.
